What a silly word Cruise Jobs is…
What a silly word really Cruise Jobs, when I myself think of working on a cruise ship, I would use the word cruise ship jobs. But you really will be amazed at what people google when they search for words; this word is one of the most popular.
I worked on cruise ships for 18 years and I would never use this expression, but obviously other people do use it.

Casino Dealer doing cruise jobs
I worked in the casino for most of my life and on cruise ships, doing casino jobs as a casino dealer for my last 8 years of ship life for Royal Caribbean International, doing three of there Celebrity Cruises ships as well. Before them I worked for a lot of different cruise lines, sometimes for the casino concessionaire, which has practically fallen away these days. One of the things I gained or I am very thankful is, from working for Royal Caribbean International is that I was trained on craps (dice) for most dealers or croupiers this is the pinnacle of there casino career, or for me it was. What a feeling standing there with the stick in your hand or feeling the dice as they fly from the stick as you push it out.
Beauty Salon, Shoppies, girls/guys doing Cruise Jobs
I really never envied the Steiner girls or guys on cruise ships with the long hours they had to work, my niece wanted to work in the beauty salon as a beautician doing massage. I basically told her the hours that some of them worked, she quickly changed her mind. I guess I should have let her find out for herself, it probably would have given her an excellent life lesson and made her live in the real world maybe. The Steiner staff would have to do the cleaning thing the night before the end of the cruise for the inspection in the morning. Though they always had loads of fun after hours socializing with all the officers and getting to all those great parties.
The shoppies had a nice social life out and about most nights in the bars; they had a pretty good life, except for when they had to do stores in port. Not such a lovely job if you are a girl, loading boxes and goodies for the pier.
Other kinds of Cruise Jobs
The divers on the big ships had a wonderful job imagine doing this for a living, basically training people to get certified and then taking them out for dives. This is a wonderful job, and then spending a few weeks on the Royal Caribbean private island.
Cruise Staff also have quite a cushy job they get to entertain the passengers, also a lot of work, you really have to love people and have fun doing activities.
Youth Activities is another excellent choice of cruise job, if you are trained in child minding, another job where you really do something that you love.
A lot of the jobs are for people that are passionate about what they do, like the bridge officers (maritime) or the engine room guys. It’s all about your outlook on life and what you are getting from it. Most of those guys are pretty ambitious working to get somewhere, promotion wise, whether it is to be the main guy like the Captain; it’s a career for a lot of them. Good for them I admire them for there ambitions.

Why Casino Cruise Jobs?
Now why do Casino Cruise Jobs?
Why on earth would you want to swap your nice comfortable land based casino for casino cruise jobs?
Why leave your nice comfort zone to move into such a disciplined strict life with lots of restrictions being a dealer on a cruise ship.
It is not all the fun and glory as you think, sorry to be such a drag but the fact of the matter is its not some fairytale it’s the harsh real world of cruising and the passenger comes first. The added extras like boat drill the crew ones and the passenger ones. Some cruise lines its quite a pain in the butt depending on your dear deck officers in charge, but like all things you get the odd nasty one, but all the others were wonderful.
What you have to do extra on Casino Cruise Jobs
Of course at the end of the cruise you have the pleasure of doing the slot count as a dealer, which is sorting all the money from the bva’s then running it through the money counting machines “glory”. You are assigned a task, which can be either, on some ships the coin boxes from below, or dropping the bva (where the cash goes into, a metal box) with the key. Afterwards it is tidying up putting things back where they belong. The slot count takes quite a while; you also get to do the table counts on a regular basis, also counting the money. So a lot more involved than you would have normally doing casino cruise jobs.
You also get to do welcome on board (embarkation duties), not all the time and not on all ships. The larger vessels have some added duties of course, which is understandable as they carry more passengers so jobs have to be split up to facilitate the smooth running of things.
Passenger boat drills on embarkation day as well, assisting them at their muster stations, life jacket demonstration, and feel like those lovely airhostesses feel when they do one. It’s like anything in life its what you make of situations, make it fun and it wont be a drag, enjoy doing casino cruise jobs, go far.
When you do Casino Cruise Jobs the hours and all
The sea days can be quite long, and you do a split shift, where you work in the day and then you will have a couple of hours off or more to have a nap, shower, eat and all that. You come back and do the rest of your shift; sometimes you may have a table count afterwards. Transatlantic or re-positioning cruises can also involve a lot of sea days, so a lot more hours involved. There are days where you start earlier and finish first and then other times where you might start a big later if you are on the table count or closing, but that might be irrelevant depending on business.
Why on earth you would do Casino Cruise Jobs
Well for starters to experience all those amazing places, people that open your eyes to that fascinating world of ours out there that many never get to see but on the television and Internet.
You get to learn about different cultures from the people you work with, some cruise ships are like a united nations, with crewmembers from all little nooks and cranny’s of the world. My last ship I shared with a girl from Nepal, where else would you get that experience. Whether you enjoy that is a matter of your personal choice you have to adapt to all situations and people from the passengers to your fellow crew, staff members and officers.
You get to go on some amazing shore excursions, whether sea kayaking in St Lucia or rafting in Jamaica, pretty cool if you think some people never get to see these places. If you are lucky to do Europe you can get to see all those old buildings and experience the history and the life of say Venice, go in a gondola or see the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome. Some people never get to go there at all, so wow how awesome is that.
You can have an exhilarating social life as well, make friends with all kinds of people, you might even find the love of your life. Many people I know have had that amazing experience, some have families now and have moved land based.
Like all jobs everything has its pluses and minuses, you have to think what exactly you are doing this for. Whether it is for the money, the travel, need to escape from a land-based casino as you have been banned for driving for a year. At the end of the day everyone has his or her own magic plan, vision or goal to accomplish. We are all unique individuals, we all think differently thank goodness for that.
I for one 18 years as a croupier and various positions in the casino and worked on all kinds of cruise ships and got to see some amazing places. I even got to the Galapagos Islands, pretty awesome for someone from South Africa.
Of course there is always promotion and moving up the ranks doing casino cruise jobs, on your way to being that casino manager on a ship.

My one main goal in life was doing Cruise Jobs
We all start off with our main goals in life, mine of course was cruise jobs on ships, mainly to see all the places in the world, my dad was in the navy. I grew up in Cape Town which is still after all my travels still one of the most picturesque places in the world. I got to see almost all the places I dreamt of as a child, except Mcchu Picchu in Peru
1st Break to get Cruise Jobs on ships
My life on cruise ships started through a friend who was working on a ship out of Cyprus, there were 3 of us, we started working on a Louis Cruise Line ship doing cruises to Israel, Egypt and the Greek Islands. I worked on 2 ships with them, 2 stints on both. It was to be the start of a long life on cruise ships, eighteen years in total….yes some people do it for a few years and quit, I kept going. I loved seeing all the new places, well eventually they were not new, got to do India twice, Norway until I dreamt of the place.
Cruise jobs on a ferry boat
I even did a short stint on a ferry boat between Greece and Northern Italy, Anek Lines during the winter, lovely choppy seas of course. The money was good on there I worked for an American man who had the concessionaire on there. My life changed, I then went to work out of New Orleans doing the Caribbean for Commodore Cruise Line, no longer exists. It was fun doing the Caribbean, going to the beach, wonderful experiences.
I returned to Europe and got a job with an English Casino Concessionaire, Southern Games based in Fulham, London. I did quite a lot of different ships with them, the Portuguese ship the Funchal, which I did Brazil for the summer season three times, one of my favourite places is Brazil, the people just have so much energy, the place has a real buzz about it, the music. The Funchal would do seasons out of Sweden, the Norwegian fjords, beautiful, then Mediterranean, she kept moving, was in all different languages as well. I did some ships out of Palma de Majorca, one strangely enough yet again a Louis Cruise Line ship (haunting me) that was owned previously by Croisieres Paquet the owners of the Mermoz. It seem strangely intertwined, I never did figure that out. I also did the wonderful cruise ship Marco Polo joining her in Singapore coming back to the Mediterranean.
