Blessings on Costa Concordia

Costa Concordia before the mishap of a cruise ship

Here is a clip prior to the big mishap that this Cruise Ship the Costa Concordia endured from a human error, forgetting all the safety codes, no maydays, all the cruise ships, ships in the area could have helped.

The crew did there jobs on the Cruise Ship

An excerpt from an engineer on board the Cruise Ship (see link below excerpt):
"Carollo's story is emblematic. After working a 12-hour shift, he was sleeping when the cruise ship passed too close to the island of Giglio and ran into sharp rocks at 9:45 p.m.

By the time he jumped out of bed, dressed and opened the door to his cabin, there was already water rushing down the hallway.

He reported for duty in the engine room, and through portals in closed, air-tight hatches, he could see that water had enveloped the generators and engines within just 10 minutes.

"Within 15 minutes, the engine room told the bridge that there was nothing to be done. The situation was beyond repair," Carollo said.

He reported to his emergency post, a life raft for 35 crew members, and awaited the abandon-ship order, which didn't come for over an hour, prompting many junior officers to take matters into their own hands and begin evacuating passengers.

"We didn't wait for the captain to give the order to abandon ship. We saw how serious the situation was, and we did it ourselves," said Alberto Fiorito, 28, an officer and machinist on the cruise ship."

Costa Concordia

Let Safety be first on Cruise Ship

Lets hope that new safety rules and possibly new lifeboats or a different concept in getting people off cruise ships quicker. I know they have big shutes on the big Royal Caribbean cruise ships, surely Costa had them as well, so people could slide down.

The old way with women, children, elderly and disabled, I guess that was not completely followed why is a poor 5 year old girl one of the ones missing. That is the saddest thing of all, may they find that little girl alive, children are very resourceful they can hide in many places, may she be spared.

It happened on the 13th January, the old jinx of Friday the 13th kicking in with human errors. Cruise Ships will always be around, I was blessed that all the years I worked on cruise ships I was spared this fate. I had 18 years of good and bad years on doing cruise jobs, I loved working on the sea, sometimes I felt safer than at other times, depending on the history of the cruise ship, some I knew had had accidents and been repaired, of course I was more wary of a cruise ship like that, whilst on board.

How the Cruise Ships kept getting bigger

<img src="CelebrityCruiseLineimage/cruise-ships.jpg" alt="Cruise Ships">
You can find so many cruise ships around nowadays; the cruise lines were churning them out of the shipyards, which had a flourishing business. The Cruise Ships were getting bigger and bigger, trying to outdo each other and have the biggest and best ship breaking all kinds of boundaries on all side. Take Royal Caribbean International pushing the boundaries with all the added extra aboard their vessels, first the climbing wall and the skating rink, now the floating bar, with the added extras onboard there amazing vessels. It is quite interesting to know a little about cruise ships prior to
thinking about doing cruise jobs.

Some of the biggest Cruise Ships today

From Wikepedia:
1. Allure of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International, debut 2010 - 225,282 GT (gross tonnage)
Oasis of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International, debut 2009 - 225,282GT
2. Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Cruise Line, debut 2010 - 155,873 GT

6. MSC Fantasia, MSC Cruises, debut 2008 – 137,936 GT
MSC Splendida, MSC Cruises, debut 2009 – 137,936 GT

Some of the popular cruise ships from 2011 are:
Allure of the Seas, Norwegian Epic, Carnival Magic, Oasis of the Seas, Celebrity Solstice, Disney Dream, Ruby Princess, Liberty of the Seas, Carnival Dream, Norwegian Gem, Celebrity Constellation. Sourced from Cruise Critic.

A little bit of useful information for considering doing cruise ships jobs.

So is it a great experience to work on big Cruise Ships or not?

I always vowed I was not interested in working on big cruise ships, that they were so impersonal, so many people. I was pleasantly surprised when I worked onboard the Adventure, the Navigator of the Seas and the Voyager of the Seas. It was quite a pleasant experience doing cruise jobs on the big cruise ships, lots to do and see facilities for the crew just seemed to be a touch better. I also worked on the Millenium, the Infinity from Celebrity, which are a little more upscale than the Royal ones’ but also a pleasant experience, just a touch more classy.

So I would say yes there are lots more people about but there is so much more interactive things like the cabin facility things like the Internet in the cabin, Ipads now.

Missing your Cruise Ship

Why missing your Cruise Ship is a problem

As a crew member this is a pretty scary thought “missing your cruise ship” whilst doing cruise jobs. The thought alone brings this image of your ship sailing sway and you are stuck on the pier, scary really. I never missed my ship but have come close on a couple of occasions, one’s on Xmas Eve in Key West, another time in Safaga, Egypt. Key West, we had gone shopping at the Ross for Less store, on the other side of town and do you think we could get a taxi back, eventually we got one but it was cutting it so fine. In Egypt it was another story, I was on the Marco Polo, a lot of us had taken a taxi to Luxor, which is far away about 5, or 6 hours drive with escorts through the desert. Coming back seems to take longer what with waiting for the escorts at different points. To cut a long story short we made it back with barely any time to spare, and had to leg it from the taxi to the ship. Luckily all the passenger tours were late as well.

You do need to be aware of this lovely little sign that is at the gangway as you go ashore in the various ports in the world on board your ship with cruise jobs. It reads “crew all aboard time”, generally you as a crew member need to be back 1 hour prior to the vessel sailing, for passengers it is generally 30 minutes. If the ship is at tender, not alongside a pier it can be a bit tricky as well, so allow a bit more time in this kind of port. They sometimes change the sailing time, so always be aware of this, it could be for the weather or another ship needs the berth.

<img src="femaleontenderboatimage/missing-your-cruise-ship.jpg" alt="Missing your Cruise Ship">

What happens, when missing your Cruise Ship

What happens if you are not there one hour prior to sailing time?
The crew purser will let the port agent know, who in turn informs the local authorities. The port agent is then handed your passport and your next of kin information, all obtained from the crew purser from your sign-on paperwork. The port agent contacts the local police and hospitals to see if you were involved in an accident or been arrested for something. The passport is with the port agent to allow you to fly from the country you are in at the time.

You will generally be dismissed if you missed the ship because of forgetting the time, or stuck in trouble, or even if you fall asleep on the beach or had a couple too many drinks. You normally get to come back to the ship to collect your belongings and then you are on your way home.

If you have a valid reason because of an accident, obviously the port agent will have proof from the doctor or hospital, your belongings will be packed up for you and sent to your address or hospital.

Beware of the Time, when Missing your Cruise Ship

For finding that position, go to this post on my site called Cruise Ship Vacancies.

So the moral of the story is Beware of the Time, that lovely little sign that reads “crew all aboard time”. Always allow for extra time especially when you have hired a car and need to return it or if it is a big vacation time somewhere. Recommend an awareness of that board and of the time factor in not missing your Cruise Ship.

The World’s Largest Cruise Ships

The world's largest cruise ships.

It's true that size is not everything - stop laughing at the back, it is true. But for some, the true epic scale of a mammoth building or edifice makes their head spin. The excitement of seeing a truly huge piece of architecture - whatever the setting - can be genuinely impressive. For some people it is the ambition of the project that enchants, for others it is the sheer mechanical magnitude. When the Titanic was developed, its size was one of the things that impressed everyone, but what was truly astounding was that something so big would actually work from a mechanics point of view. Just as there is no shortage of cities worldwide bringing architects in to conceptualize and build ever taller buildings, in a never-ending race to build the world's tallest (and you can be sure that once one city builds the tallest, another will try to beat it), there seems to be a tendency among cruise lines to build the biggest cruise ships. This race is currently headed in terms of length by Cunard's RMS Queen Mary 2, a 1,132 foot, 148,528 tonne behemoth that regularly crosses the Atlantic and has carried former world leaders such as Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac and George H.W. Bush, the US Olympic Basketball "Dream Team", and the first US copy of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Although shorter than the Queen Mary 2, Royal Caribbean's Freedom class (consisting of the Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Independence of the Seas), are all heavier than her, weighing an astounding 154,407 tonnes. Built in Finland, these ships are the current holders of the record for largest passenger ships by tonnage and sail to the Caribbean, serving Mexico, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Haiti - the final location being Royal Caribbean's private resort in Labadee. Both titles, for longest cruise ships and heaviest ship, though, are set to be given up in this coming year, and will be held by Royal Caribbean's latest development. Again built in Turku, Finland, Royal Caribbean's Oasis class will stretch the record yet further. 1,180 feet (360m long - that's three football pitches including endzones!), and weighing 220,000 tonnes, the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas) will be without any shadow of a doubt the biggest passenger liners that have ever been built. This will come to pass in the late stages of 2009, and if there's one thing of which you can be absolutely certain it is that once these cruise ships hit the waves, there will be a company looking to find a way to build something longer, heavier and more remarkable. The centre of the cruise ships, incorporating a sliding roof, will have what amounts to a set of apartment blocs with a central area featuring a park (based on New York's Central Park) with its own microclimate to ensure that plants and trees can survive. The most amazing levels of innovation, the most ambitious ideas in shipbuilding have been put in place to ensure that this latest record-breaking ship takes its place in the press, and in the minds of lovers of luxury cruises.
