Hi. Could you give some advise on how to get a cruise ship job? What qualifications do i need to have?

March 3rd, 2010

I am considering applying for a cruise ship job but I am clueless on where to start. What could be the qualities that would give me advantage over other applicants. Thanks.
It’s pretty hard for Americans to get cruise ship jobs – since the ships are mainly registered outside the US, the cruise lines don’t have to obey the same laws as in the US as far as minimum wage, breaks, stuff like that goes. Cruise ship workers work EXTREMELY hard with long shifts and not much pay…usually doubtful that Americans will take these jobs due to the low pay (no offense is meant to Americans, but the pay is just so much lower than what we are used to in this country). The exception would be ship

entertainment staff – show dancers and singers…I don’t know if that’s what you have in mind or not though. There are a few American-flagged ships run by NCL that cruise Hawaii though.

Whats the chances of getting a cruise line job? Any pointers?

December 22nd, 2009

Yes I am American
They dont know what they are talking about. I worked onboard ships for 3 years and am american. I made about $3000 a month and worked between 3 and 6 hours a day, 7 days a week, mind you. You can easily get a job onboard. Find out what you are good at and apply for that equivalent onboard. Here are a few well paying and american hiring positions: Cruise director, cruise staff, youth counselor, gift shop, spa attendant, masseuse, navigational officer, safety officer, environmental officer, hotel director, assistant hotel director, event manager, manager of onboard media, sound tech, lighting tech, theater tech, broadcast tech, dancer, guest entertainer, musician, front desk, casino dealer or manager, finance/accounting, payroll, personnel, crew purser, bar manager, art auctioneer, shore excursions sales, shorex manager, and the list goes on. There are literally hundreds of jobs on each ship that dont suck. With ships being built bigger and better every year as well as the industries high turnover rate, you can expect a lot of openings to keep coming up. They do pay people from the Philippines and indonesia slave wages, and sadly they also treat them as such. You however are from a western country and will get paid a lot more than them for a job that works you much less. This is a fact of the industry. You will find loads of people from around the world working and you better believe they make enough to bring back to their homes in the UK, Holland, South Africa, Australia, Canada, etc. I dont know what you are good at but the lowest paying job I listed pays about 1500 a month and the highest paying is about 10,000 a month. You dont pay for your room and you eat the same food as the passengers but you do it for free. Depending on your position you will not even pay for your flights to and from the ship. Plus you get to travel the world as I did for 3 years spending whatever time you can in port off the ship.

Cruise jobs for Americans?

December 3rd, 2009

Hi. I have a bachelor’s degree in 2 foreign languages and love travelling, but my current job keep me inside a cubicle all day. I am doing some research on careers where I can travel and use my language skills. I know of a couple of people who work on a cruise ship (not American citizens though) and they love their jobs and have seen the world. I’d love to do something like that, but I’m not sure what type of position they offer for US citizens and how much the pay would be. Does anyone have any insight about this? Thank you so much!
It sounds like you would be a great candidate to work on a cruise ship! I have heard that the Norwegian Cruise line is currently the only one that has cruises beginning and ending in the US without a stop in a foreign country. This is on their cruise ship that travels through the Hawaiian Islands. Because of this, I think there is a law that requires that they use only people who are either US citizens or are those with legal resident status (green card) to work in the US. Because of this more limited pool of potential employees, this might give you your best chance of getting hired. After getting that initial hire and gaining some experience you could probably apply for positions on other ships or even other cruise lines with destinations around the world

How to get a job on a cruise ship?

November 26th, 2009

okay well im only in 10th grade right now , but i was wonder if you have to go to college to get a job on a cruise ship . and if you do what college would be good to go to ? also is it hard to get a job on royal carribean ?
It all depends on what you want to do on the cruise ship. If you want to do service work (waitress, maid service) or even cruise staff you don’t necessarily have to have a college degree. If you want to do entertainment you should have some experience. It is hard as an American to get jobs on most cruise liners as they are not “flagged” in America. (If you have ever been on a cruise you will notice that alot of the staff are foreign) BUT Norwegian Cruise Line Hawaii cruises, are the first US flagged ship in over 50 years! I had a friend that worked on NCL in Hawaii. To find out more info on cruise jobs check out their web sites. Some even have videos on what it’s like to work on a ship and what to do to apply. Here are some of the ones that I found that might interest you to look at. Working on a cruise ship can be LONG hours, many days in a row. YOu work in contracts. You may get a 3 month contract for one ship and then 3 months on another ship and then who knows. And generally you have to share a room with one or more room mates depending on what job you have. But while you are young it will be awesome like going away to college or camp. A lot of hard work, but a lot of fun! GOOD LUCK!!! Royal Caribbean http://www.royalcaribbeanproductions.com/ NCL America (these are the Hawaiin ships I mentioned) http://164.109.173.40/employment/nclAmerica/index.htm NCL http://www.ncl.com/nclweb/staticPage.html?pageId=NCLS.ShipboardEmploymentLanding Disney http://corporate.disney.go.com/careers/who_cruise.html
