Missing your Cruise Ship

Why missing your Cruise Ship is a problem

As a crew member this is a pretty scary thought “missing your cruise ship” whilst doing cruise jobs. The thought alone brings this image of your ship sailing sway and you are stuck on the pier, scary really. I never missed my ship but have come close on a couple of occasions, one’s on Xmas Eve in Key West, another time in Safaga, Egypt. Key West, we had gone shopping at the Ross for Less store, on the other side of town and do you think we could get a taxi back, eventually we got one but it was cutting it so fine. In Egypt it was another story, I was on the Marco Polo, a lot of us had taken a taxi to Luxor, which is far away about 5, or 6 hours drive with escorts through the desert. Coming back seems to take longer what with waiting for the escorts at different points. To cut a long story short we made it back with barely any time to spare, and had to leg it from the taxi to the ship. Luckily all the passenger tours were late as well.

You do need to be aware of this lovely little sign that is at the gangway as you go ashore in the various ports in the world on board your ship with cruise jobs. It reads “crew all aboard time”, generally you as a crew member need to be back 1 hour prior to the vessel sailing, for passengers it is generally 30 minutes. If the ship is at tender, not alongside a pier it can be a bit tricky as well, so allow a bit more time in this kind of port. They sometimes change the sailing time, so always be aware of this, it could be for the weather or another ship needs the berth.

What happens, when missing your Cruise Ship

What happens if you are not there one hour prior to sailing time?
The crew purser will let the port agent know, who in turn informs the local authorities. The port agent is then handed your passport and your next of kin information, all obtained from the crew purser from your sign-on paperwork. The port agent contacts the local police and hospitals to see if you were involved in an accident or been arrested for something. The passport is with the port agent to allow you to fly from the country you are in at the time.

You will generally be dismissed if you missed the ship because of forgetting the time, or stuck in trouble, or even if you fall asleep on the beach or had a couple too many drinks. You normally get to come back to the ship to collect your belongings and then you are on your way home.

If you have a valid reason because of an accident, obviously the port agent will have proof from the doctor or hospital, your belongings will be packed up for you and sent to your address or hospital.

Beware of the Time, when Missing your Cruise Ship

For finding that position, go to this post on my site called Cruise Ship Vacancies.

So the moral of the story is Beware of the Time, that lovely little sign that reads “crew all aboard time”. Always allow for extra time especially when you have hired a car and need to return it or if it is a big vacation time somewhere. Recommend an awareness of that board and of the time factor in not missing your Cruise Ship.

See how to apply to Royal Caribbean International

Easy steps to apply to Royal Caribbean International

The Royal Caribbean International has a really easy website to navigate, to get to all the relevant pages and to the hiring partners in the various countries but you can also register your resume on the site itself.

(See clip below from the Allure of the Seas, just to get an idea what the cruise ship looks like, what they have onboard all.)

The thing to remember is, that it is quite a big change to work on a cruise ship, a completely different environment. The appearance might be of a hotel resort but it is a moving one at that with all the relevant safety aspects as well. You will need to adapt to living in a fairly small cabin and will have to or not share with another person possibly from another country with all their strange quirks and foibles.

So make sure that you are certain about the position you would like to work in onboard the cruise ship as well.

Getting a Cruise Ship Job Made Easy! « Violet2015’s Blog

Don’t limit your chances of success by only applying directly to the cruise line companies themselves. You might be surprised to know that concessionary companies and staffing agents are actually responsible for hiring a large percentage of cruise ship employees.

Too often job seekers miss this opportunity because they mistakenly assume that applying through a hiring agency or concessionary company is not the best way to get hired. For this reason the applicant ‘pool’ tends to be much smaller.

You can use this knowledge to your advantage and greatly increase your chances of success by making sure that you apply to as many concessionaires and staffing agents as you can, as well as applying directly to the cruise line companies.

If you’re unsure what the difference is between a cruise line, concessionaire and staffing agent, then here’s a quick overview:

The cruise line is the company that actually owns and runs the cruise ship. However an onboard concessionaire has a contract with the cruise line company to operate a particular service across their fleet of ships (e.g. the duty free shops and the fitness/beauty salons onboard, etc).

This is similar in the way that a large shopping mall will have lots of retail stores inside. The retail shop provides the particular service and the mall provides shoppers and the outlet.

It’s important to know that if you’re employed by a concessionaire, then you are employed and paid by that company and not the cruise line (although you still follow the same rules and regulations and get the same privileges onboard as all other staff members).

A staffing agent is someone who works on behalf of the cruise line company (or concessionaire) to provide staff for usually a wide range of departments onboard. Once you have been placed by a staffing agent, their job is usually done and all the rest of the details are handled directly between the cruise line and the employee.

Cruise Ship Jobs for International Staff?

A question I get asked quite a lot by cruise ship job seekers is:

“Is it more difficult for a non-American to get a job on a cruise ship?”

The answer of course, is a resounding “NO!”

And if you’ve ever been on a cruise ship and met some of the staff who work onboard, you would probably laugh at this question! For non-American cruise ship job hunters this seems to be a fairly common concern.

In fact, sadly, some people actually write and tell me that they’re giving up on the idea of working on a cruise ship because they’re not American…

Cruising is one of the fastest growing leisure sectors. It’s a huge industry worth billions of dollars – and the biggest cruising market is… yep, America!

For this reason most of the world’s cruise line companies at least have a presence there (mainly Miami). And of course, it’s fairly close to the Caribbean which is the most popular cruising destination.

But does this mean that it’s mainly Americans who get to work onboard and have all the fun?

Nothing could be further from the truth!

The cruise line industry is an international industry that employs tens of thousands of staff from the world over. What’s more, this is probably one of the few industries that employs people from virtually any country you can think of. And many more from Countries that you didn’t even know existed!

On my first ship (Carnival Fascination) there were SEVENTY TWO different nationalities of people working onboard ONE ship. This was split over about 900 crew (which also gives you a little glimpse into how much fun it can be working and socializing with all these different people from so many different backgrounds!)

And this is fairly typical.

There are tens of thousands of staff from English speaking countries working on cruise ships right now, including; Americans, British, Irish, South African, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand.

Not to mention the tens of thousands of staff from Europe, the Far East, the Middle East, South America & the Caribbean, Russia and many more.

So I’m always amazed when people tell me that they can’t get a job onboard a cruise ship because they’re “not American”!

I hope this has dispelled that “myth” and will prevent you from giving up and missing out on a fantastic and life-changing opportunity.

Does anyone know how to get a job with a cruise line?

I've been trying for the last month but I can't seem to get any responses. Anyone have any tips??
If you look at the cruise line websites most have career or employment pages, which show their vacancies and where to apply to: http://www.pocruises.com/Careers.axd http://www.cunard.co.uk/HR/ http://www.carnival.com/cms/fun/fun_jobs/fun_jobs.aspx http://www.royalcaribbean.co.uk/contentPage.do;jsessionid=0000q2ZBy_MuN3idwaylTV3H_R8:13dlht8th?pagename=Current_Vacancies http://www.mscgva.ch/contact/contact_page.html?zoom_highlight=careers Just a sample, and some of the links are pretty well hidden but they are on the website somewhere. Cruise lines do get an enormous amount of applicants, so it does take time and they do prefer people with previous experience who already have the necessary maritime qualifications.Good Luck.

Where can I get a job on a cruise ship? I live near Los Angeles Ca ?

What company can I work for and where do I apply? For a job on a Cruise Line ?
You need to go to the cruise line web sites. There you will find a link to jobs, employment, human resources or some such link that will give you information about their positions. DO NOT use any other web sites that require you to pay a fee to register or get job information or referrals. Some cruise line sites may have current vacancies they are recruiting for. Several cruise lines have new ships coming out soon so opportunities will be there. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Disney and some others will have new ships launched in the next couple years. Here are some links: Carnival is the parent company for several cruise lines including Carnival, Cunard, Princess, and Holland America. So contacting Carnival will likely get you leads to the other cruise lines also. PRINCESS: http://www.princess.com/index.html CARNIVAL: http://www.carnivalcruiselines.com/ Then Royal Caribbean cruise line is a partner with Celebrity and Azamara. So contacting RC will likely also get you leads to these others. Royal Caribbean has very good information about its positions. So if you go there first you will know what most ships have. Then if you have further questions you should write a letter to the cruise line and ask them; they will respond. AZAMARA: http://www.azamaracruises.com/07/azama..... CELEBRITY: http://www.celebritycruises.com/home . ROYAL CARIBBEAN: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/gohome.d..... NORWEGIAN: http://www.ncl.com/ DISNEY: http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/dcl/..... Another thing to do is to contact the concession that run the shops on the ships like the souvenir, gift and clothing shops. These are the companies that hire the beauty shop/spa employees for ships. Below are links for you. http://www.steinerleisure.com/ and http://www.hardingbros.co.uk/
