My one main goal in life was doing Cruise Jobs

Nr 1 Goal-do Cruise Jobs on Ships

<img src="cruiseshipimage/cruise-jobs.jpg alt="Cruise Jobs">

A RCCL Ship in Costa Maya, Mexico

We all start off with our main goals in life, mine of course was cruise jobs on ships, mainly to see all the places in the world, my dad was in the navy. I grew up in Cape Town which is still after all my travels still one of the most picturesque places in the world. I got to see almost all the places I dreamt of as a child, except Mcchu Picchu in Peru

1st Break to get Cruise Jobs on ships

My life on cruise ships started through a friend who was working on a ship out of Cyprus, there were 3 of us, we started working on a Louis Cruise Line ship doing cruises to Israel, Egypt and the Greek Islands. I worked on 2 ships with them, 2 stints on both. It was to be the start of a long life on cruise ships, eighteen years in total….yes some people do it for a few years and quit, I kept going. I loved seeing all the new places, well eventually they were not new, got to do India twice, Norway until I dreamt of the place.

<img src="Mermozimage.jpg" alt="Mermoz" title="The French Cruise Ship-Mermoz" />
The French cruise ship the Mermoz

I got a taste of what life on cruise ships were about, working out of Cyprus, I loved doing that part of the world, Egypt, Israel and the Greek Islands, Cyprus is a wonderful place and the people. Then it was time to move on, after a year I got a job on a French Cruise Ship the Mermoz owned by Croisieres Paquet. I worked for a casino concessionaire Casinos Austria. The Mermoz, sadly, does no long exist, she was sold to strangely enough to Louis Cruise Line, scrapped her after a few years.  The Mermoz was by far my favorite cruise ship, even after all those years (18), she was a classic old lady, very French.  I saw practically all the world, working on board her. Thank You Mermoz for the wonderful experiences of seeing the Galapagos Island not once but twice, Cuba, India, South America, Norway even my home town Cape Town, and then some really remote places as well, St Helena Island midway into the Atlantic, that is just a few. They even had wonderful musical cruises, theatrical ones, where they would go to places in old amphitheatres in Greece and do shows there, or have classical show on board.

Cruise jobs on a ferry boat

I even did a short stint on a ferry boat between Greece and Northern Italy, Anek Lines during the winter, lovely choppy seas of course. The money was good on there I worked for an American man who had the concessionaire on there.  My life changed, I then went to work out of New Orleans doing the Caribbean for Commodore Cruise Line, no longer exists. It was fun doing the Caribbean, going to the beach, wonderful experiences.

I returned to Europe and got a job with an English Casino Concessionaire, Southern Games based in Fulham, London.  I did quite a lot of different ships with them, the Portuguese ship the Funchal, which I did Brazil for the summer season three times, one of my favourite places is Brazil, the people just have so much energy, the place has a real buzz about it, the music. The Funchal would do seasons out of Sweden, the Norwegian fjords, beautiful, then Mediterranean, she kept moving, was in all different languages as well. I did some ships out of Palma de Majorca, one strangely enough yet again a Louis Cruise Line ship (haunting me) that was owned previously by Croisieres Paquet the owners of the Mermoz. It seem strangely intertwined, I never did figure that out. I also did the wonderful cruise ship Marco Polo joining her in Singapore coming back to the Mediterranean.

I ended my cruise history by doing 8 years with Royal Caribbean International, doing three of their Celebrity ships, wonderful cruise line as well.  The Royal Caribbean ships are getting bigger and bigger, I did three of the Voyager class one.  I highly recommend working for Royal Caribbean, check out their website.
I managed to fulfill my numer one goal and many others along the way, the moral is to follow your gut feeling inside with many things in life, for all of your thinking about that be adventurous get a cruise jobs for you, aim for the goals and things will happen for you.

Summer Seasonal Alaska Cruise Ship Jobs

June 29th, 2010

Cruise Ship Jobs

Cruise Ship Jobs

Cruise Ship Jobs

Working on a cruise ship is an excellent way to make money out of Alaskan tourism. Alaskan cruises are some of the most popular vacations to take and cruise lines sail the waters of Alaska in both the summer months as well as in the winter. Therefore, while seasonal employment does exist in the summer for cruise ship jobs (when cruising is most popular) it is also available in the winter. Those willing to work longer than just one season are in incredibly high demand because the cruise lines aren’t required to re-train dedicated employees. Those who stick with it for longer than one season often move up to higher earning positions.

Cruise ships, because of their sheer size have a variety of positions available. Thus, at any given time there are almost always open jobs. The cruise ship industry makes millions of dollars in revenue each year and the field is certainly growing. Therefore, working for a cruise ship represents an excellent way to earn money and see the world. If seasonal employment is your only concern and you are simply looking for a good way to earn money, there is no need for you to apply to cruise lines that run specifically out of Alaska. You can apply at any time and be on your way to seeing the world in no time! Some potential employees however, are eager to see specific parts of the world (like Alaska for example) and thus, apply for cruise lines that sail in one specific area. This is equally as common and while limiting yourself to a cruise line that sails only one area of the world might in turn limit your job opportunities, procuring a job on a cruise line is infamous in terms of good seasonal work and high earning potentials.

Cruise ship jobs are like fishing jobs in many ways. The hours can be long and sleeping conditions tight and isolated. One of the largest complaints from cruise ship employees is the hours in which you are working. Because most jobs require employees to stay on the ship it can begin to feel as if you are working 24-hours a day. However, the long hours always translate into high paychecks and like fishing jobs, the potential to earn is incredibly high because your employer often pays for most of the living expenses.  Therefore room and board, food costs and medical expenses are either all paid, or represent very low costs for employees.

Also like fishing jobs, some of the best cruise ship jobs are unadvertised, so finding the right one can be tricky. Sending out applications and researching the industry are the best ways to procure a cruise ship job. Knowing the positions you are qualified for, and applying well in advance will increase your chances of finding the seasonal employment as well as the paycheck of your dreams.

The World’s Largest Cruise Ships

June 23rd, 2010

The world’s largest cruise ships.

It’s true that size is not everything – stop laughing at the back, it is true. But for some, the true epic scale of a mammoth building or edifice makes their head spin. The excitement of seeing a truly huge piece of architecture – whatever the setting – can be genuinely impressive. For some people it is the ambition of the project that enchants, for others it is the sheer mechanical magnitude. When the Titanic was developed, its size was one of the things that impressed everyone, but what was truly astounding was that something so big would actually work from a mechanics point of view. Just as there is no shortage of cities worldwide bringing architects in to conceptualize and build ever taller buildings, in a never-ending race to build the world’s tallest (and you can be sure that once one city builds the tallest, another will try to beat it), there seems to be a tendency among cruise lines to build the biggest cruise ships. This race is currently headed in terms of length by Cunard’s RMS Queen Mary 2, a 1,132 foot, 148,528 tonne behemoth that regularly crosses the Atlantic and has carried former world leaders such as Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac and George H.W. Bush, the US Olympic Basketball “Dream Team”, and the first US copy of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Although shorter than the Queen Mary 2, Royal Caribbean’s Freedom class (consisting of the Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Independence of the Seas), are all heavier than her, weighing an astounding 154,407 tonnes. Built in Finland, these ships are the current holders of the record for largest passenger ships by tonnage and sail to the Caribbean, serving Mexico, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Haiti – the final location being Royal Caribbean’s private resort in Labadee. Both titles, for longest cruise ships and heaviest ship, though, are set to be given up in this coming year, and will be held by Royal Caribbean’s latest development. Again built in Turku, Finland, Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class will stretch the record yet further. 1,180 feet (360m long – that’s three football pitches including endzones!), and weighing 220,000 tonnes, the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas) will be without any shadow of a doubt the biggest passenger liners that have ever been built. This will come to pass in the late stages of 2009, and if there’s one thing of which you can be absolutely certain it is that once these cruise ships hit the waves, there will be a company looking to find a way to build something longer, heavier and more remarkable. The centre of the cruise ships, incorporating a sliding roof, will have what amounts to a set of apartment blocs with a central area featuring a park (based on New York’s Central Park) with its own microclimate to ensure that plants and trees can survive. The most amazing levels of innovation, the most ambitious ideas in shipbuilding have been put in place to ensure that this latest record-breaking ship takes its place in the press, and in the minds of lovers of luxury cruises. What Cruise Ships are good to get a job on?

March 17th, 2010

I am 18 years old and I am taking time to make some cash before i start college. i looked into some jobs and in the end, i have heard cruise ships are awsome to work on.

I Really want some ideas for what cruise ships people preffer to work for and how to apply. also, perhaps some know easier ways of getting cruise ship jobs than others… that would be awsome.

The big cruise companies (Royal Carribean, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruises etc) all have pretty high criteria for successful applicants. You will find that you MUST have previous shore based experience for your chosen role at sea. Even if you do have shore based experience but no ship based background, you should expect to start in a level entry position. Working on a cruise ship is very different to a land based equivalent which is why cruise lines look for sea based experience first.

If you want to become a Junior Assistant Purser you would need a year or two experience as a hotel receptionist. Even if you were a Senior Receptionist or even a Reception Manager on land, it is highly unlikely that you would be offered a ship based position of the same seniority and you will start at the bottom of the ladder again. Having said that promotion is rapid if you are good at your job.

If you want to work in housekeeping onboard a cruise ship, again I would imagine that you would need a year or two land based experience in a hotel of a comparative four or five star standard.

It really depends what job you want to go for, which department you want to work in. Also bear in mind that cruise contracts are typically six months – so dependent on how long you have before college starts will affect your success in getting a position.

I don’t know of any easy way to get a job on a cruise ship but do not fall for any of there internet scams that are so prevalent, the ones that ask you to pay money up front. From experience the best way to go is direct to the cruise lines themselves or send your CV to their legitimate recruitment agencies which are based throughout the world. Use the web to find the email or postal addresses for the cruise lines and recruitment agencies, just don’t give anyone any money as it’s usually a scam.

Larger ships offer more opportunities to meet people but the smaller cruise ships can offer a better standard of living.

Rgds.

Whats the chances of getting a cruise line job? Any pointers?

December 22nd, 2009

Yes I am American
They dont know what they are talking about. I worked onboard ships for 3 years and am american. I made about $3000 a month and worked between 3 and 6 hours a day, 7 days a week, mind you. You can easily get a job onboard. Find out what you are good at and apply for that equivalent onboard. Here are a few well paying and american hiring positions: Cruise director, cruise staff, youth counselor, gift shop, spa attendant, masseuse, navigational officer, safety officer, environmental officer, hotel director, assistant hotel director, event manager, manager of onboard media, sound tech, lighting tech, theater tech, broadcast tech, dancer, guest entertainer, musician, front desk, casino dealer or manager, finance/accounting, payroll, personnel, crew purser, bar manager, art auctioneer, shore excursions sales, shorex manager, and the list goes on. There are literally hundreds of jobs on each ship that dont suck. With ships being built bigger and better every year as well as the industries high turnover rate, you can expect a lot of openings to keep coming up. They do pay people from the Philippines and indonesia slave wages, and sadly they also treat them as such. You however are from a western country and will get paid a lot more than them for a job that works you much less. This is a fact of the industry. You will find loads of people from around the world working and you better believe they make enough to bring back to their homes in the UK, Holland, South Africa, Australia, Canada, etc. I dont know what you are good at but the lowest paying job I listed pays about 1500 a month and the highest paying is about 10,000 a month. You dont pay for your room and you eat the same food as the passengers but you do it for free. Depending on your position you will not even pay for your flights to and from the ship. Plus you get to travel the world as I did for 3 years spending whatever time you can in port off the ship.

JOB ON A CRUISE SHIP

December 20th, 2009

The Pluses and Minuses of Doing Cruise Jobs

By Bernadette Cole

Cruise jobs can be fun in many ways, you can make money, but it is also not every one’s cup of tea.So many have a great desire to work on cruise ships, so many more have already done it over the years, with great success, seeing the world meeting people and having great adventures.

Cruise ships jobs can be very rewarding especially if you like being around people and enjoy the interaction. People (the passengers) come on cruise ships to have fun, get away and enjoy themselves. The hours can be very long and tough on you, depending on the cruise job you are doing. Its like pretty much anything in life it is what you put into it, what you get out. Homesickness can be a problem, but you get over it pretty quickly, you are too busy working, having fun and adventures. You find the days can fly you don’t even know what day of the week it is, just when the home port is coming up.

Depending on your cruise ships jobs, most of the jobs are tips/gratuities based, unless you are in an admin job or on a set salary. Tips can be pretty good, especially as the passengers are on the cruise ship to have fun and are relaxed and generally feeling generous. So there is a great opportunity for earning good money, no rent to pay, or food to pay on board. It can set you up, for if you wanted to open your own business one day, but you do need to save, some people tend to go crazy and spend in all the wonderful ports.

Yes cruise employment is not always every one’s cup of tea.

1. If you are constantly seasick and feel like crap.

2. You are not a peoples person and have to constantly deal with people.

3. You do not like confined spaces, small cabins.

4. The discipline that goes with working on cruise ships, the boat drills, cabin inspection and regulations.

If you have always desired to work on cruise ships, imagine one day you look back and think I regret not having tried it. You can even make a career out of cruise jobs, there are loads of opportunities on board for promotion, even changing departments once you are on board.

It can be a wonderful life opportunity, the travel and meeting different people from all nationalities (the crew), it is like a huge life lesson in many ways. The seasickness is not such a problem nowadays with the huge cruise ships out there, they all have stabilisers, but some people still do suffer from that (you get those arm bands etc). At the end of the day it is a huge adventure in more ways than one, think of all those great people you will meet and the wonderful memories you will have.

Hi, I worked on cruise ships for 18 years, enjoyed it thoroughly, seen the world, I can recommend it to anyone that wishes to try it. I now live at home in Cape Town with my Senegal Parrot Syd, doing online work.

What company and what position on a cruise ship pays the most, How much realistically ?

May I highly recommend that you check with the Carnival Cruise Line because it is an excellent Cruise Line Company and I have enjoyed three different cruises that I did take in the past.
