What Cruise Ships are good to get a job on?

I am 18 years old and I am taking time to make some cash before i start college. i looked into some jobs and in the end, i have heard cruise ships are awsome to work on.

I Really want some ideas for what cruise ships people preffer to work for and how to apply. also, perhaps some know easier ways of getting cruise ship jobs than others... that would be awsome.

The big cruise companies (Royal Carribean, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruises etc) all have pretty high criteria for successful applicants. You will find that you MUST have previous shore based experience for your chosen role at sea. Even if you do have shore based experience but no ship based background, you should expect to start in a level entry position. Working on a cruise ship is very different to a land based equivalent which is why cruise lines look for sea based experience first.

If you want to become a Junior Assistant Purser you would need a year or two experience as a hotel receptionist. Even if you were a Senior Receptionist or even a Reception Manager on land, it is highly unlikely that you would be offered a ship based position of the same seniority and you will start at the bottom of the ladder again. Having said that promotion is rapid if you are good at your job.

If you want to work in housekeeping onboard a cruise ship, again I would imagine that you would need a year or two land based experience in a hotel of a comparative four or five star standard.

It really depends what job you want to go for, which department you want to work in. Also bear in mind that cruise contracts are typically six months - so dependent on how long you have before college starts will affect your success in getting a position.

I don't know of any easy way to get a job on a cruise ship but do not fall for any of there internet scams that are so prevalent, the ones that ask you to pay money up front. From experience the best way to go is direct to the cruise lines themselves or send your CV to their legitimate recruitment agencies which are based throughout the world. Use the web to find the email or postal addresses for the cruise lines and recruitment agencies, just don't give anyone any money as it's usually a scam.

Larger ships offer more opportunities to meet people but the smaller cruise ships can offer a better standard of living.

Rgds.

Whats the chances of getting a cruise line job? Any pointers?

Yes I am American
They dont know what they are talking about. I worked onboard ships for 3 years and am american. I made about $3000 a month and worked between 3 and 6 hours a day, 7 days a week, mind you. You can easily get a job onboard. Find out what you are good at and apply for that equivalent onboard. Here are a few well paying and american hiring positions: Cruise director, cruise staff, youth counselor, gift shop, spa attendant, masseuse, navigational officer, safety officer, environmental officer, hotel director, assistant hotel director, event manager, manager of onboard media, sound tech, lighting tech, theater tech, broadcast tech, dancer, guest entertainer, musician, front desk, casino dealer or manager, finance/accounting, payroll, personnel, crew purser, bar manager, art auctioneer, shore excursions sales, shorex manager, and the list goes on. There are literally hundreds of jobs on each ship that dont suck. With ships being built bigger and better every year as well as the industries high turnover rate, you can expect a lot of openings to keep coming up. They do pay people from the Philippines and indonesia slave wages, and sadly they also treat them as such. You however are from a western country and will get paid a lot more than them for a job that works you much less. This is a fact of the industry. You will find loads of people from around the world working and you better believe they make enough to bring back to their homes in the UK, Holland, South Africa, Australia, Canada, etc. I dont know what you are good at but the lowest paying job I listed pays about 1500 a month and the highest paying is about 10,000 a month. You dont pay for your room and you eat the same food as the passengers but you do it for free. Depending on your position you will not even pay for your flights to and from the ship. Plus you get to travel the world as I did for 3 years spending whatever time you can in port off the ship.

JOB ON A CRUISE SHIP

The Pluses and Minuses of Doing Cruise Jobs

By Bernadette Cole

Cruise jobs can be fun in many ways, you can make money, but it is also not every one's cup of tea.So many have a great desire to work on cruise ships, so many more have already done it over the years, with great success, seeing the world meeting people and having great adventures.

Cruise ships jobs can be very rewarding especially if you like being around people and enjoy the interaction. People (the passengers) come on cruise ships to have fun, get away and enjoy themselves. The hours can be very long and tough on you, depending on the cruise job you are doing. Its like pretty much anything in life it is what you put into it, what you get out. Homesickness can be a problem, but you get over it pretty quickly, you are too busy working, having fun and adventures. You find the days can fly you don't even know what day of the week it is, just when the home port is coming up.

Depending on your cruise ships jobs, most of the jobs are tips/gratuities based, unless you are in an admin job or on a set salary. Tips can be pretty good, especially as the passengers are on the cruise ship to have fun and are relaxed and generally feeling generous. So there is a great opportunity for earning good money, no rent to pay, or food to pay on board. It can set you up, for if you wanted to open your own business one day, but you do need to save, some people tend to go crazy and spend in all the wonderful ports.

Yes cruise employment is not always every one's cup of tea.

1. If you are constantly seasick and feel like crap.

2. You are not a peoples person and have to constantly deal with people.

3. You do not like confined spaces, small cabins.

4. The discipline that goes with working on cruise ships, the boat drills, cabin inspection and regulations.

If you have always desired to work on cruise ships, imagine one day you look back and think I regret not having tried it. You can even make a career out of cruise jobs, there are loads of opportunities on board for promotion, even changing departments once you are on board.

It can be a wonderful life opportunity, the travel and meeting different people from all nationalities (the crew), it is like a huge life lesson in many ways. The seasickness is not such a problem nowadays with the huge cruise ships out there, they all have stabilisers, but some people still do suffer from that (you get those arm bands etc). At the end of the day it is a huge adventure in more ways than one, think of all those great people you will meet and the wonderful memories you will have.

Hi, I worked on cruise ships for 18 years, enjoyed it thoroughly, seen the world, I can recommend it to anyone that wishes to try it. I now live at home in Cape Town with my Senegal Parrot Syd, doing online work.

New Cruise Ships & Job Opportunities for 2009!

Despite all the talk of the current economic climate, the boom in the cruise industry just doesn't seem to be slowing down.

It's even more hard to believe when you consider that each one of these ships costs hundreds of millions of dollars to build!

What's more, these aren't the only ships being planned.

This year we have yet another "Biggest Cruise Ship in the World" entry from Royal Caribbean with their jaw-dropping 6,400-passenger, Oasis of the Seas.

Of course, this is fantastic news for those looking for cruise ship jobs because these new ships alone will create a demand for an EXTRA 10,000 new crew members in 2009 to fill every position imaginable - from cleaners, entertainers, shop staff, bar staff, beauty staff, security, casino staff, photographers and many more.

Here's a look at some of the new cruise ships being launched in 2009 and some important information about each new ship:
