Blessings on Costa Concordia

Costa Concordia before the mishap of a cruise ship

Here is a clip prior to the big mishap that this Cruise Ship the Costa Concordia endured from a human error, forgetting all the safety codes, no maydays, all the cruise ships, ships in the area could have helped.

The crew did there jobs on the Cruise Ship

An excerpt from an engineer on board the Cruise Ship (see link below excerpt):
"Carollo's story is emblematic. After working a 12-hour shift, he was sleeping when the cruise ship passed too close to the island of Giglio and ran into sharp rocks at 9:45 p.m.

By the time he jumped out of bed, dressed and opened the door to his cabin, there was already water rushing down the hallway.

He reported for duty in the engine room, and through portals in closed, air-tight hatches, he could see that water had enveloped the generators and engines within just 10 minutes.

"Within 15 minutes, the engine room told the bridge that there was nothing to be done. The situation was beyond repair," Carollo said.

He reported to his emergency post, a life raft for 35 crew members, and awaited the abandon-ship order, which didn't come for over an hour, prompting many junior officers to take matters into their own hands and begin evacuating passengers.

"We didn't wait for the captain to give the order to abandon ship. We saw how serious the situation was, and we did it ourselves," said Alberto Fiorito, 28, an officer and machinist on the cruise ship."

Let Safety be first on Cruise Ship

Lets hope that new safety rules and possibly new lifeboats or a different concept in getting people off cruise ships quicker. I know they have big shutes on the big Royal Caribbean cruise ships, surely Costa had them as well, so people could slide down.

The old way with women, children, elderly and disabled, I guess that was not completely followed why is a poor 5 year old girl one of the ones missing. That is the saddest thing of all, may they find that little girl alive, children are very resourceful they can hide in many places, may she be spared.

It happened on the 13th January, the old jinx of Friday the 13th kicking in with human errors. Cruise Ships will always be around, I was blessed that all the years I worked on cruise ships I was spared this fate. I had 18 years of good and bad years on doing cruise jobs, I loved working on the sea, sometimes I felt safer than at other times, depending on the history of the cruise ship, some I knew had had accidents and been repaired, of course I was more wary of a cruise ship like that, whilst on board.
