The World’s Largest Cruise Ships

The world's largest cruise ships.

It's true that size is not everything - stop laughing at the back, it is true. But for some, the true epic scale of a mammoth building or edifice makes their head spin. The excitement of seeing a truly huge piece of architecture - whatever the setting - can be genuinely impressive. For some people it is the ambition of the project that enchants, for others it is the sheer mechanical magnitude. When the Titanic was developed, its size was one of the things that impressed everyone, but what was truly astounding was that something so big would actually work from a mechanics point of view. Just as there is no shortage of cities worldwide bringing architects in to conceptualize and build ever taller buildings, in a never-ending race to build the world's tallest (and you can be sure that once one city builds the tallest, another will try to beat it), there seems to be a tendency among cruise lines to build the biggest cruise ships. This race is currently headed in terms of length by Cunard's RMS Queen Mary 2, a 1,132 foot, 148,528 tonne behemoth that regularly crosses the Atlantic and has carried former world leaders such as Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac and George H.W. Bush, the US Olympic Basketball "Dream Team", and the first US copy of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Although shorter than the Queen Mary 2, Royal Caribbean's Freedom class (consisting of the Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Independence of the Seas), are all heavier than her, weighing an astounding 154,407 tonnes. Built in Finland, these ships are the current holders of the record for largest passenger ships by tonnage and sail to the Caribbean, serving Mexico, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Haiti - the final location being Royal Caribbean's private resort in Labadee. Both titles, for longest cruise ships and heaviest ship, though, are set to be given up in this coming year, and will be held by Royal Caribbean's latest development. Again built in Turku, Finland, Royal Caribbean's Oasis class will stretch the record yet further. 1,180 feet (360m long - that's three football pitches including endzones!), and weighing 220,000 tonnes, the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas) will be without any shadow of a doubt the biggest passenger liners that have ever been built. This will come to pass in the late stages of 2009, and if there's one thing of which you can be absolutely certain it is that once these cruise ships hit the waves, there will be a company looking to find a way to build something longer, heavier and more remarkable. The centre of the cruise ships, incorporating a sliding roof, will have what amounts to a set of apartment blocs with a central area featuring a park (based on New York's Central Park) with its own microclimate to ensure that plants and trees can survive. The most amazing levels of innovation, the most ambitious ideas in shipbuilding have been put in place to ensure that this latest record-breaking ship takes its place in the press, and in the minds of lovers of luxury cruises. It has enabled thousands of people to trade a forty hour work week for world wide travel and life changing experiences. Regardless of your nationality, experience, sex, or background, the cruise ship employment industry offers the average person the employment chance of a lifetime. Where else can you get paid tax free while visiting the Caribbean, or the Alaskan frontier? However, it is imperative that you have an educated resource to answer your questions, give you definitive advice, and shoot you straight. In order to truly separate yourself from your competitors you need to know how to apply, when to apply, and various other aspects to help ensure your success. While there is a definite demand within cruise ship employment industry, there are also thousands of applicants. The thing that makes you stand out from a stack of resumes is vital information, which very few people have access to. There are countless guides and agents that would lead you to believe they are the authority on the subject. However, what they lack is the actual experience of life on board a cruise ship. Do you really know what work you would be involved with? How will you pay your bills while away? What hours will you be working? Can you socialize with guests? These are just a few very important questions that you need to have answered, not by someone from behind a desk, but someone involved in the cruise ship employment industry. By someone that has successfully hired thousands of applicants personally, and knows what employers are looking for. Think of how much of an advantage you would have, if you had access to a foremost expert that ran a hiring agency, and staffed several prominent cruise liners. There are many variables that go into the entire process of employment from start to finish. If you have a better understanding of what employers are looking for, then you position yourself as a strong potential hire. Once you move forward with the process, you can establish yourself as a credible candidate during your actual interview. How will you know what to say, to enhance your chances of employment? And how should you say it? It's rather easy once you have access to the criteria employers look for, long before you even step foot in your interview. If the idea of making countless friends, connections, and traveling to exotic locations interests you, then you owe it to yourself to get the facts. What you leave to chance will have a great impact when you're seeking cruise ship employment. Remember, the dream job your seeking is being sought after by thousands of others as well. Whats the chances of getting a cruise line job? Any pointers?

Yes I am American
They dont know what they are talking about. I worked onboard ships for 3 years and am american. I made about $3000 a month and worked between 3 and 6 hours a day, 7 days a week, mind you. You can easily get a job onboard. Find out what you are good at and apply for that equivalent onboard. Here are a few well paying and american hiring positions: Cruise director, cruise staff, youth counselor, gift shop, spa attendant, masseuse, navigational officer, safety officer, environmental officer, hotel director, assistant hotel director, event manager, manager of onboard media, sound tech, lighting tech, theater tech, broadcast tech, dancer, guest entertainer, musician, front desk, casino dealer or manager, finance/accounting, payroll, personnel, crew purser, bar manager, art auctioneer, shore excursions sales, shorex manager, and the list goes on. There are literally hundreds of jobs on each ship that dont suck. With ships being built bigger and better every year as well as the industries high turnover rate, you can expect a lot of openings to keep coming up. They do pay people from the Philippines and indonesia slave wages, and sadly they also treat them as such. You however are from a western country and will get paid a lot more than them for a job that works you much less. This is a fact of the industry. You will find loads of people from around the world working and you better believe they make enough to bring back to their homes in the UK, Holland, South Africa, Australia, Canada, etc. I dont know what you are good at but the lowest paying job I listed pays about 1500 a month and the highest paying is about 10,000 a month. You dont pay for your room and you eat the same food as the passengers but you do it for free. Depending on your position you will not even pay for your flights to and from the ship. Plus you get to travel the world as I did for 3 years spending whatever time you can in port off the ship.

Owl City – Captains and Cruise Ships

I am stuck in L.A. through the week and cant get away And youre alone on the pier in West Palm Beach on your holiday Stormy nights re-awake the stomachache that Ive acquired From feeling down, things look grim and Im so sick of being tired Apartment lights go dark and its depressing but what can I do? The midnight streets feel dead when I am so used to driving with you Brighter lights fill the nights and bluer skies reflect in your eyes As I inspect and analyze all these dreams I dont recognize If youre still up when the ships in the port prepare to set sail Comb the beach and put those blue flowers up in your ponytail Inside my head your voice is still resounding but what can I do? The empty rooms feel cold when I am so used to being with you Count the stars, watch the waves, absorb the summer sun and think of me When you explore hidden coves and tiny island chains throughout the sea Can you still hear my voice when Im outside from over the phone? For what its worth darling dear, I wish you were here cuz I feel alone When you were home, wed sing but since youve left I dont hear anything And though I feel so sad I cant believe things are really that bad Old captains and brand new cruise ships Sailing over the briny sea When I crash my beloved desk job And swim through the debris Ill cut loose and leave this madhouse Bound for the Atlantic blue Ill stroll down your tree-lined driveway And sail the ocean with you
